Posting closes 2/7/2024This position is responsible for successfully identifying potential safety projects as part of the Highway Safety Improvement Program. This position will also be responsible for overseeing highway safety studies internally or by consultants.Examples of WorkThe following examples are intended only as illustrations of various types of work performed. No attempt is made to be exhaustive. Related, similar, or other logical duties are performed as assigned. The Department may require employees to perform functions beyond those contained in job descriptions. The Department may modify job descriptions based on Department needs. The Arkansas Department of Transportation is an "at will" employer.* Perform data queries utilizing database and geographic information system (GIS) software.* Perform benefit cost analyses.* Assist in the prioritization of potential safety projects for implementation.* Assist in the administration of the Department's roadway safety management system.* Prepare safety reports and other documents.* Conduct feasibility studies for various highway safety improvements.Minimum RequirementsEducation and experience: Possession of a current Arkansas license to practice professional engineering or graduation from an EAC of ABET approved civil engineering curriculum or equivalent as judged by the Arkansas Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors. Experience in transportation planning or traffic engineering.Knowledge, skills and abilities: Effective communication skills both orally and in writing. Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel and Outlook. Experience in transportation planning and the ability to evaluate the safety implications of various projects. Ability to organize, prioritize and multi-task. Ability to collect, analyze, and interpret technical data and recommend courses of action. Knowledge of Interactive Highway Safety Design Model (IHSDM) software, the AASHTO Highway Safety Manual, and the AASHTO A Policy on Geometric Design of Highways and Streets desired.Working conditions: Office environment. Occasional statewide travel.Licenses, registrations and certifications: Engineer Intern certification. Valid driver's license.("EAC of ABET" means Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology.)
