Rockefeller Cancer Institute, leading the growth of research, outreach and engagement efforts during a period of innovation, transformative change and energetic pursuit of NCI designation.The AD, COE will have access to substantial resources including an endowed chair and multiple year support.The OpportunityReporting to the UAMS Vice Chancellor/Cancer Institute Director, Michael Birrer, MD, PhD, the Associate Director will lead all community outreach and engagement activities, including the management of the statewide navigation program, mobile screening efforts, clinical trials involvement, and research, focused on cancer burdens and disparities critical to the catchment area. Additionally, the Associate Director will hold a faculty position in a department in one of the UAMS colleges including medicine, pharmacy, nursing, health professions, and public health.The Ideal CandidateThe Associate Director will be a progressive and visionary leader with contributions in community advocacy, teaching and service that show a commitment to diversity and equal opportunity and will have a successful funding record in one of the areas of community engagement, health disparities, population science, cancer epidemiology, and/or implementation science research.The AD must be eligible for academic appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or above, with an MD, MD/PhD, PhD or comparable degree in a relevant field, and an understanding of community outreach and engagement, particularly in underserved populations.The OrganizationThe Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute is focused on delivering cancer care to underserved populations throughout the entire State of Arkansas.A joint venture with Baptist Health and the recent addition of the first-ever Proton Center in the State is evidence of UAMS' commitment to growth and innovation in providing excellent cancer care to the community. In a team science environment, the Institute's 170+ members conduct outstanding cancer research in multiple scientific programs and support a robust clinical trials infrastructure with -270 cancer clinical trials.The Institute has six institutional shared resource facilities, including the IDeA National Resource for Quantitative Proteomics which provides protein identification, mapping of post-translational modifications, global proteomics, and quantitative comparison of proteins in biological samples, and has recently hired 21 laboratory-based cancer researchers.UAMS is one of 57 institutions with an NIH Clinical and Translational Science Award, which supports translational research and creates a supportive environment that synergizes with the Cancer Institute to promote transdisciplinary research. UAMS researchers also lead five NIH-funded Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE's), with three having ongoing cancer focused research activities. UAMS faculty work in collaboration with Arkansas Children's Hospital and its Research Institute, including a USDA-funded nutrition center, to address pediatric cancer-related clinical care and research.The RegionLittle Rock is the capital of Arkansas and a bustling urban center located along the south bank of the Arkansas River, surrounded by state and national parks, beautiful lakes, clear streams, waterfalls, caverns, mountains and trails, golf courses and historic scenic drives.
