The RN I initially demonstrates a novice level of nursing practice. This level of practice is characterized by Nursing skill acquisition and the developing ability to identify and perform appropriate nursing assessments and interventions per the established guidelines or plans of care for assigned patients. With increasing experience and confidence the RN will progress to an advanced beginner, usually within the first year of employment. The advanced beginner will provide safe and effective basic patient and family centered care and has gained enough experience to begin to anticipate usual courses of actions in the Emergency Department. Common patient assignments are patients from birth to 21 years of age with life threatening or emergent injuries and illnesses.

Associate's degree or equivalent from two-year college program or technical school or nursing diploma

1. Nursing Process and Clinical Responsibilities

+ Demonstrates basic knowledge and skills to assess patients and provide developmentally appropriate and culturally sensitive care.1) Applies knowledge of growth and development at a beginner level.2) Uses developmentally appropriate language and demonstrates awareness of potential cultural issues.3) Utilizes appropriate diversional, play, or recreational activities.

+ Consistently applies the nursing process in patient care.1) Uses patient information to identify basic patient/ family needs and desired outcomes. Begins to recognizes variations from norms and patterns and trends in patient data.2) Demonstrates basic knowledge of common patient conditions and seeks additional information as needed.3) Participates in developing the plan of care in collaboration with the patient, family, and interdisciplinary team members.4) Identifies, seeks help from others prn, and responds appropriately to changes in patient condition.

+ Provides individualized patient and family education at beginner level.1) Participates in assessing patient and family learning needs and developing appropriate education plans.2) Consistently documents all patient and family education activities3) Identifies and uses appropriate patient education materials for assigned patients.4) Evaluates effectiveness of patient education for assigned patients.

+ Implements evidence-based nursing practice using best available evidence, patient's and family's preferences and values, and team's clinical expertise at a beginner level.1) Participates in the search for evidence to guide clinical practice.2) Participates in sharing search findings with peers.3) Participates in efforts to incorporate evidence into clinical decision making, policies and practice initiatives.4) Participates in the implementation of practice changes.5) Participates in the evaluation of practice changes.6) Begins learning about evidence based practice.
